At Maungatapu School our philosophy is that homework should not be onerous for the children or families. It needs to relate directly to the learning in class and should not be new learning. It should focus on reading and maths knowledge. Children are encouraged to take part in activities outside of school hours, such as clubs and sports.
At Maungatapu School, we encourage students to read every night. Our junior school children (yr 1-3) students should be reading from a text they have seen and/or read before at school. For our senior school children (yr 4-6), students are reading to gain knowledge and reading for pleasure. Readers can come in a range of genres from chapter books to specific readers assigned by the teacher. It is important that we model a passion for reading as adults, to show our children that reading is fun and enjoyable.
Finally, we encourage parents and caregivers to engage with students about what they are learning at school. Samples of learning across the curriculum are shared using Seesaw; our online student portfolio.
